Perhaps “Father of the Year” might have been more appropriate

Okay, anyone else having that lingering “huh?” moment today?
I voted for President Obama. I continue to support him, despite what I believe are some mistakes and bad judgment calls since taking the oath back in January. And, I have nothing but the utmost respect for an individual who can remain calm while being accused of everything from being a foreigner to having a secret agenda to usher in Hitler’s Amerika.
But, a Nobel Peace Prize?
*blinks*
What?
Former President Jimmy Carter received the same honor 20 years after his presidency, in recognition for the tireless efforts he made for peace. In 1978, it was former President Carter who brought Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat together to sign the Camp David Peace Accord. He was nominated for the prize many times. And, he deserved it.
So, what has President Obama done to earn this honor? According to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, he was honored for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”
Extraordinary efforts? Like what? Giving a kick-ass speech in Germany? Knowing which fork to use at the UN dinners? Keeping Rahm Emanuel from going all Dick Cheney and shooting a Chinese ambassador in the face?
Look, I truly support and admire our president. But, he’s been in office nine months. He has done nothing above and beyond the call of the normal diplomatic duties of a president with regard to international relations. This news does nothing but give Rush Limbaugh, the de facto Republican commander in chief, and his ilk a reason to scream about this president cares more about other nations than he does his own. The prize committee cited, in particular, the president’s “outreach to the Muslim world.” I imagine guns sales went up one hundred fold today as collective wingnuttia hunkered down, waiting for the Muslim shock troops to come savage our land. World News Daily has already called for the impeachment of President Obama because of the prize. No, really.
Perhaps it’s good the international community doesn’t view our leader as an out-of-control cowboy with nothing but contempt for anyone outside our borders. But, I would rather it have been more than nod toward a simple change in the administration of this country.

P.S. My long absence is due to my hard drive going belly up. *sigh* Big thanks go out to my bestest friend and computer guru KN for getting back to my little corner of the internets.
Our chaplain-in-chief
Posted by Lab Kat in Conservatives, Government, Politics, Religion on September 25, 2009
Frankly, I thought this would come sooner. Like five minutes before President Obama was sworn in on Abraham Lincoln’s bible.
Christians of, shall we say, a more conservative bent are a little peeved our president has not chosen an “official” church to attend for the duration of his term(s). And, his attendance is not up to snuff as well.
I’m sorry. When did our Commander-in-Chief become the Chaplain-in-Chief? Why is it required he go to church? Oh, wait. Back that up. A christian church, of course. Imagine the national meltdown if President Obama chose a mosque or temple as his place of worship. I’m sure god would immediately smite us with all his holiness. Or something like that.
Look, I want the president to guide our country with regard to law, order and the occasion family photo-op. He is not, contrary to what some think, the go-to person for spiritual guidance in this country. In fact, I’d rather he keep his spirituality to himself. First, his personal faith is none of my business. Second – and I do realize there are people in this country right now who believe our country was founded by fundamentalist baptists with sprinkles of catholicism for nifty fashion sense – this is NOT a christian nation. It is a nation made of up people who happen to be christian. And, muslim. And, jewish. And, those who reject all of the above. Having our highest leader invoke god while in a official capacity is the worst breach of the separation of church and state.
Ironically, one of the most frequent church-goers in recent history was former President Clinton, who has been demonized by the conservatives. And, former President Reagan – the Republican patron saint – rarely attended.
Look, if I decide I want spiritual guidance, I will go to the clergy, not to my government. And, while we’re on the subject of extreme right-wing thought, if I want a medical opinion, I’ll go to the doctor, NOT my government.
I want my president and government to GOVERN, not preach, convert or invoke the name of god for indefensible choices, like starting wars and such. Because we know that god is all about killing other people in the name of national security.
I hope our president keeps his faith private and his head clear when making decisions of national and international importance. Quite frankly, you can’t be a good president on your knees.

“Indoctrinating” our students
Posted by Lab Kat in Conservatives, Government, Liberals, Politics, Religious Extremism, Republicans, Texas, Wingnuts on September 3, 2009
So.
Okay.
Let me try to understand this.
Amend that. We are talking about Texas conservatives here, so “understanding” may be stretching it. I’m still trying to understand why my best friend of 17 years – also a devote Republican and conservative – decided to axe our friendship because I dared argue with her about atheism. Sometimes you gotta file it under “No place to file.”
*deeeeeeeep breath*
So. Forcing children to learn about the bible – a christian ideological text – in secular, tax-funded classrooms in not indoctrination. Having a state board consider removing all “liberal” historical figures from textbooks and replacing them with right-wing individuals (Newt Gingrich) and organizations (The Moral Majority) would not be indoctrination. Having former President George W. Bush – a Republican – speak to students across the nation about the importance of education and urging children to write him is not indoctrination.
BUT, our current president, Barack Obama, speaking to classrooms across the nation about the importance of taking responsibility for themselves and succeeding in their education IS indoctrination? Apparently, the first steps toward brainwashing our children with such concepts as working hard and respecting people in authority. Only a few steps from another Hitler Youth and the total socialist takeover of our country by a man who is half black.
There are real, live school districts in Texas that are banning his speech from classrooms (Witchita Falls and Lewisville) and some were “debating” today over whether or not to carry the president’s speech (Hurst-Euless-Bedford). And parents – whom I suspect are proud teabaggers – are actually keeping their children home from school. All because the President Obama is going to speak to students. About the importance of education. Being responsible. And, all that other liberal propaganda.
I’m sorry, but where do I get off this crazy train?
I’ve gone from amused to angry to frightened to righteously pissed. The hypocritical bullshit that spews from Texas conservatives’ mouths in the name of “protecting” the children, the country and the good ol’ white American way of life has finally stepped on my last nerve. Remember when Bush, with the assistance of a Republican judge in Florida, stole the presidential election and we liberal folk were told to just suck it up, fer god’s sake, and be adults. We were supposed to respect the president, his Orwellian vice president and all their decisions?
Remember?
Well, right back at ya, motherfuckers. I’m sick and tired of right-wingers being allowed to act like a bunch of unruly, petulant 2-year-olds and no one is calling them on it. They have screamed and mocked and viciously attacked people at town hall meetings regarding health care. They want to indoctrinate students into christianity in taxpayer-funded school districts, yet howl when atheists insist on the separation of church and state. They want to control a woman’s medical decisions through the government, yet rant about their grandmothers being left to die if the government offers a public option in health insurance. They have unrepentantly brought guns within shouting distance of the president. They have called for his death from their pulpits and called his children whores. They have said they are the “real” Americans and they want their country back.
No. You can’t have it back. Real Americans voted in the majority last November and elected our current president.
Or, to put in terms you wingnuts will understand… “Our country. Love it or leave it.”

A high state of lunacy in Texas
Posted by Lab Kat in Conservatives, Government, Politics, Republicans, Texas, Texas education, Wingnuts on August 30, 2009
Sweet smoking jesus and mary. My state has become a mecca for every racist, ignorant, crackpot wingnut out there. I don’t blame the rest of the country for thinking my state is fucking crazy.
I mean, we’ve got a congressman stating the federal government will randomly kill people through the proposed health care public option and tries to prove it by using an example of an private sector insurance company denying coverage. On the bright side, he was called out on this idiocy by people attending his town hall meeting.
We’ve a loony governor who has whipped the state’s secessionists into a frothing frenzy, with talk of hating the United States, the president and the American flag. (Ironic as the wingnuts accuse liberals and progressives of hating our country all the time.) His main Republican opponent in the upcoming governor’s race wants to bring back segregation in our schools.
Meanwhile, our State Board of Education is proposing a history curriculum that would indoctrinate students with right-wing propaganda. Our schools are already forced to teach the bible in classrooms.
On the higher education front, a University of Texas professor is encouraging christians to marry right after high school in an effort to promote safe sex.
We are in dark days here in the Lone Star State and I don’t see it changing anytime soon. I’m not just angry. I’m actually frightened. Seriously. Secession, hating our country and brainwashing our students with right-wing, conservative bullshit and christian ideology.
Somebody want to give me some good news?

Sotomayor steps into history
Posted by Lab Kat in Government, Politics on August 6, 2009
Despite the dogged efforts of the collective wingnuttia, our country made another tiny, historic step in the right direction today as Judge Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed to the Supreme Court.
My thoughts and good wishes go out to Judge Sotomayor. I hope she is, indeed, a wise Latina woman.

The Texas State Board of Ignorance, Part 2
Posted by Lab Kat in Conservatives, Government, Politics, Republicans, Texas on July 10, 2009
Well, instead of Cynthia “Obama is a Terrorist” Dunbar, our governor selected Gail Lowe, Republican conservative and seven-year State Board of Eduction member, as board chairman. Lest you think that’s an improvement, Lowe is the board member who handpicked David Barton, founder of the Christian-nation advocacy organization Wallbuilders, to the panel of six “experts” to review the social studies curriculum for our public schools. Barton, as you may recall has problems with civil rights leader César Chávez being included in Texas school books. To quote:
David Barton, president of Aledo-based WallBuilders, said in his review that Chávez, a Hispanic labor leader, “lacks the stature, impact and overall contributions of so many others.”
“(Chavez’s) open affiliation with Saul Alinsky’s movements certainly makes dubious that he is a praiseworthy to be heralded to students as someone ‘who modeled active participation in the democratic process.’”
In addition, Lowe has voted for unscientific, creationist criticisms of evolution in science textbooks and curriculum standards and opposed a requirement on book publishers to include medically accurate information about responsible pregnancy and disease prevention in new high school health textbooks.
It’s times like this I’m so glad I don’t have children. Otherwise I’d be spending my free time debriefing the poor things on the right-wing propaganda they were receiving at school. On the taxpayer’s dime.

The Texas State Board of Ignorance
Posted by Lab Kat in Conservatives, Government, Politics, Republicans, Texas on July 9, 2009
Sweet smoking universe, I wish Florida would do something impossibly stupid soon so the nation would turn it’s attention from my wingnut-choked state. Seriously, it’s us and Florida in the race for the Most Right-Wing Controlled State Award. I know, I know… Kansas tries its hardest, but Florida turned the simple act of letting a woman die into the biggest public debacle since Bill Clinton tried to define the word “is.” That takes talent.
You’d think beating up gays and our governor calling for succession from the United States would be enough to keep us happy for a while. Alas, we have deeper needs. Our State Board of Education is currently deciding the social studies curriculum for the next ten years. Yeah, I know. The sense of impending doom is already thick. As part of this process, they have a panel of six “experts” handpicked by the board to review the curriculum and make a recommendation. Three of these “experts” were picked by whackjob Republican conservatives who want to nothing more than to turn our school rooms into a taxpayer-supported Sunday Schools and see our children not educated but indoctrinated into the right-wing, “family values,” fundamentalist view of the world.
Case in point: two of the three “experts” – Peter Marshall, an evangelical minister, and David Barton, founder of WallBuilders – declared that civil rights leaders César Chávez and Thurgood Marshall have been given entirely too much attention in Texas school rooms. To quote:
“To have César Chávez listed next to Ben Franklin” – as in the current standards – “is ludicrous,” wrote evangelical minister Peter Marshall, one of six experts advising the state as it develops new curriculum standards for social studies classes and textbooks. David Barton, president of Aledo-based WallBuilders, said in his review that Chávez, a Hispanic labor leader, “lacks the stature, impact and overall contributions of so many others.”
Marshall also questioned whether Thurgood Marshall, who argued the landmark case that resulted in school desegregation and was the first black U.S. Supreme Court justice, should be presented to Texas students as an important historical figure. He wrote that the late justice is “not a strong enough example” of such a figure.
But, just to be fair, they didn’t just pick on those uppity blacks and Mexicans. No, no. Women folk who don’t know their place received special attention as well.
Both Barton and Marshall also singled out as overrated Anne Hutchinson, a New England pioneer and early advocate of women’s rights and religious freedom, who was tried and banished from her Puritan colony in Massachusetts because of her nontraditional views.
“She was certainly not a significant colonial leader, and didn’t accomplish anything except getting herself exiled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for making trouble,” Marshall wrote.
“Anne Hutchinson does not belong in the company of these eminent gentlemen,” he said, referring to colonial leaders William Penn, Roger Williams and others. Williams later invited Hutchinson to help establish a colony in what became Rhode Island.
The breathtaking arrogance and stupidity makes me lightheaded. Why don’t they just come out and say “Unless you’re white, male and christian – and none of them libural christians like them Unitarians – we don’t want you in our school books. We’d rather our children understand that women and people of color are sub-standard and must be reminded of their place in our christian utopia. Namely, as second class citizens we can boss around. ‘Cause that’s what baby Jesus would do.”
And, just in case these two gentlemen aren’t enough for you, our teabagging hero Gov. Rick Perry has put State Board of Education member Cynthia Dunbar on the short list to replace deposed former Board Chairman Don McLeroy. You remember the esteemed Ms. Dunbar, the woman who stated that schools were undermining parents’ authority to teach children scriptural interpretations and President Barrack Obama is not really a U.S. citizen and, if elected, would bring about martial law, not to mention inviting terrorists into our country. Yeah, THAT Cynthia Dunbar.
And, people wonder why the rest of the nation view us as a bunch of red-necked, backwards-ass, gun-toting retarded jesus freaks. Maybe it’s because, oh I dunno, most of our state IS a bunch of red-necked, backwards-ass, gun-toting retarded jesus freaks.
To think my grandparents were proud Democrats who believed faith had its place – and it certainly wasn’t in the school room. That’s where you sent your children to actually educate their minds, not dumb them down.
Isn’t there a woman with Catholic relatives on life support in Florida SOMEWHERE?
